Sugar-good or bad?

The nectar of life….  breast milk….  has been described to me as tasting like “the milk at the bottom of the cereal bowl” by a mother of a 5-month old.  Remember how tasty that was as a kid after eating the Captain Crunch or the Cheerios loaded with tablespoons of sugar?  Our body needs the sweet stuff- glucose – a major body fuel-in order to create ATP (energy).  Excess glucose is converted to fat or glycogen for later use.  This fat is a good thing when we are 6 months old and need lots of it for growth and protection but what about when we are 10-20-40-60?

From birth we are given the sweet stuff to soothe, satisfy and nourish.  It only makes sense to me that we see a mass craving for the sweet stuff in our adult life.  We are growing increasingly busier in our modern society and need lots of soothing and nourishment to handle everyday stresses.  Depending upon one’s ability to handle stress and how busy one is I would imagine determines the craving for the sweet stuff.

Finding good quality nourishment seems to be a modern problem.  Because we are so busy we tend to look for the quick meal.  Fast food restaurants will often have 4-5 cars waiting in line to get their quick sandwich on their way to the next activity.  Loaded with fat and sugar it calms the nerves and fills the belly.  1,000 calories and a short hour or two later one is left feeling empty and a little haggard.  More glucose is needed to survive the day because there was only a lot of empty calories in the previous meal consumed. We are left feeling spacey and irritable and begin the journey to heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Sugar is abundant in our processed foods.  Traditionally used as a flavor enhancer it has worked itself into most canned goods.  You will know what I mean if you are a label reader or on a restricted diet.  It is quite difficult to find processed foods that don’t list sugar-natural or artificial- as an ingredient.  Some natural sugar alternatives that are easier on the body and the environment are: Stevia(Rebiana), Xylitol, Erythritol, Agave Nectar, Brown Rice Syrup, Maple Syrup and Honey.

I am definitely one of the sugar lovers in the world.  To me sugar equates “love”.  We always had sweets around when I was a kid.  Our weekend activities included baking a cake or a triple batch of cookies to munch on over the week.  Trying to completely eliminate sweets is a hard one for me and I appreciate the challenge of anybody who suffers from diabetes.

Sugar has gotten a bad name in my opinion.  Sugar is not bad-we need glucose for energy production…but we need to reexamine how we get it in our bodies and how much we put into them.  Are we getting energy from soda pop and candy bars; or are we getting it from carrots, potatoes, corn, red-meat, legumes, fruit and grains?  Our culture is so pumped up we seemingly can’t go without it.

Below I have broken down sugar into their simple chemical make-up.  Monosaccharides being the most easily digested by most people.

Monosaccharides: simple sugars, the monomers of carbohydrates; glucose, fructose and galactose

Disaccharides: Complex carbohydrates; sucrose(table sugar), lactose (milk sugar) and maltose (grain sugar)

Polysaccharides: glycogen and starch ( potatoes, corn, rice, cassava, wheat and used as thickening agent).  Salivary amylase or saliva splits starch into oligosaccharides-two to eight linked monosaccharides.

Oligosaccharide=Found in food substances such as onions, Jerusalem artichoke, burdock, chicory, leeks;  can be taken as a supplement to regulate intestinal flora.

Just for a matter of interest, look at these sugar molecules.  The one on the right being crystalline sucrose and the one on the left being lactose.  Very similar in structure only the lactose molecule looks like it is getting squashed! I find this interesting considering the differing texture between dairy and table sugar.  Very fitting indeed.

Mouse Trappings

Mouse Trappings

We have a new friend at Kiva Therapeutics- Priest Lake. I shall call him Mouse. My boyfriend met him first while I was in another room. He called my name tentatively “Jenny? How do you feel about mice?” My thoughts jump back to my childhood and the mice we had in our basement. We lived on the edge of town in a new development that afforded us many open fields to play kickball and tag in and lots of open space for field animals as well. So needless to say we had an array of creatures that found themselves in our basement and house. Crickets, frogs, mice, birds, mosquitoes and flies were all in my childhood house at various times and not always of their own free will. So to answer my boyfriend’s question- I have no problem with mice. I have seen many scurrying around and have even removed them from traps. I am not the sort of person you will find on top of a chair, screaming, with broom in hand waiting for somebody to take care of it. In fact when I met the mouse- or to be precise- the backend of it as it scurried out the kitchen door- I was amazed at the speed it could scurry.
What it comes down to is, when it comes to my home and food I am quite territorial. I don’t like uninvited animals breaking into my food and eating the food as if it were their own. I can tolerate critters-such as ants- scrounging for scraps on my picnic blanket, even rummaging through the garbage. But stay out of the cupboards and out of the containers on the countertops. You come into my house and you follow my rules- it is all about boundaries. So this morning when I repeatedly heard the sound of plastic rumpling I figured it was time to take action. The repeated rumpling of plastic was the sound of the mouse getting into the Oreo cookies we bought at the grocery store the day before. On some levels I am thankful to that mouse for getting into the Oreo’s and rendering them inedible…shhh don’t tell mouse-but it all comes down to the boundaries- no eating from the cupboards and countertops!
This mouse’s excitement over Oreo cookies, it made me ponder food. When we picked up the Oreo’s we each had one and then another and then another for a total of twelve maybe? That was the start of our Oreo kind of day. It was a strange addiction that I couldn’t quite get over. I would turn around and there the Oreo’s were….saying “eat me, eat me!” From the sounds of it the mouse was having the same experience. The plastic would rumple and the then it would go quiet. A few minutes later the plastic would rumple and then it would go quiet. At first we thought there was a draft that was pushing the plastic sheeting around. Nope! It was Oreo addiction. Lets look at the ingredients in Oreo cookies-mainly sugar. Sugar! I want a little sugar in my bowl
Yep across the board- all species love the sweet stuff in life. If we can’t produce it we go to great ends to obtain it, let’s face it. We need sugar for times of stress and extremes. We need it to survive cold and harsh elements out in the wilderness. er? When was the last time we were in the wilderness for months on end? We have all experienced the sugar addiction sensation at one point in our life. The irrational need to finish the sugary food that we are eating. The return to eating something that we know isn’t good for us but we crave it for some reason.
What stemmed our purchase of Oreo cookies was a trip to Walmart in rural Idaho to buy some household items. The minute we walked into the store our senses were overwhelmed with the sights, sounds and smells. The mental list we had compiled flew out the window and we lost sight of our mission as we meandered through the aisles trying to make sense of the arrangement. I am sure that to somebody the store layout made sense…to us it was a ramble of stuff that was made in China and reeked of plastic and chemicals. So at the end of our trip to Walmart we rewarded ourselves with a package of Oreo cookies. Sugar- another stimulant to add to the sights, sounds and smells of modern living. But looking at how my gut feels today I think it was more a penance. A sensory overload of sorts. Well- I guess it comes back to boundaries again. If I had respected the boundaries of my guts, I would have stopped at 3 or even 6! Not half the package. So today we all sit around groaning and trying to find the energy to move. Me, my boyfriend and our new pet mouse.

Moving forward into the future

The time has arrived for me to take the next step in my career and path of life. I move forward into the future with the goal of dreams and reality becoming one great existence.   I have moved to the mountains of North Idaho to write, study, rest, work and enjoy the stars of the night sky.  My plan is to stay here through the summer and by fall I will have devised a more holistic self, outlook, bag of tricks and procedures. It is time to integrate the rational and meta-physical self; the sensual and cerebral self; and the uber healthy self with the self that loves junk food.
I write these words partly in hopes of working through my fears and partly to share the experience with those of you who are trying to create a better existence for yourself. People often have one existence at work, another at home and then they also have a social face.  When we don’t integrate our faces we can enter into dysfunction, disease and unease.
As a massage therapist I have learned a great deal about the patterns involved in chronic pain. In some fashion there is often a disconnect in the personal goals and faces of the individual and the faces required to complete the activities of making it in the world.
I am starting the process of opening up and sharing my most intimate parts with the world in hopes of showing that we are all human. We all have faces of ourselves that lay dormant and unless we show those faces they grow moldy and stagnant.  It is time to unfurl like a fern and gather the sunlight. Please stay in touch with me as the time progresses into the future and we examine the dark and shady crevices. It is time for us humans to make our future possible and create a bounty for generations to come. Lets get the energy flowing.

Spinal Flexibility

I recently discovered this Kundalini DVD taught by Maya Fiennes

Kundalini Yoga is used to awaken the coiled energy that sits at the base of the spine in the sacrum. We can learn to move this energy up our spine and into our heads. The process of this movement balances our bodies systems and creates greater health and awareness. Various asanas, pranayama and meditation practices are utilized. One can experience bliss, greater power, mystical consciousness and greater self-realization.

Through this yoga I have gained good insight into my spine’s mobility. In my work as a massage therapist I perform the same movements daily and hourly. At the end of the day I have lost awareness of where my body lies in space after feeling 4-5 other bodies alignment.  In a seated pose, which is oh so welcome after a busy day, I lean forward and back into flexion and extension; stretching my lower back and then proceed to my middle back, neck, shoulders and lastly hamstrings.  I draw circles counterclockwise and clockwise around my mid-line.  I can feel my digestive juices gurgling; I also feel that spot in my lower back start to stretch out. ahhhhh

As I continue this 30 minute stretching routine- this Kundalini Yoga- I think how useful it would be if we did this kind of movement everyday.  Or lets be realistic- even once a week.  Many adults don’t bother in sitting on the floor. When was the last time you sat on the floor?  Now lets add the stretching part: and then circular movements and then stretched some more.  And yes- being able to make a circular movement throughout the spine is a good thing. The DVD’s instructor Maya Fuentes comments on the spine and how strength and flexibility in the spine will keep us young.  This causes me to think of somebody I know who recently had 3 vertebra fused together.  The procedure has caused great pain and this individual still has difficulty moving about; a year later.  Hmmmm.

Moving the 26 vertebra of the spine keeps our joints lubricated and reduces muscle spasm.  It pushes blood around through our body and we begin to think clearly and feel better.  If we keep mobility in the spine it reduces injury and keeps our organs functioning normally.  The spinal nerves come out of the vertebral foramen and innervate the various parts of the body.  Perhaps you pull your neck or wake up with a kink in it?   The muscle spasms and because of the neural pathways you could have resulting issues with your diaphragm!  Or your upper back can effect your stomach!

Check out this link on the spine.  You can see the pathways and corresponding organs and muscle groups that are innervated. http://www.drhunterhoats.com/3D_spine/ If you are like me, having a visual of what I am trying to feel makes it all the more better!

Bongers!

This massage tool is basically two raquetballs placed on two flexible arms. Hitting them on your body causes a revelry of vibrations throughout. Many massage therapists use this technique called tapotement in their massages. It is a good for flushing out toxins released in muscle tissue after deep work and it promotes deep relaxation by stimulating the nervous system. Initially stimulated the nervous system relaxes into the rhythm of the tapotement and hyper-toned tissue releases and blood flow increases.

Use them on yourself for those hard to reach spots on your back and IT bands or bang them on your loved ones to promote relaxation. They provide fun and relief from sore muscles for all! If you haven’t experienced them you are definitely missing out on some stimulating relief.

Time to Detox

I recently went on a road-trip with my partner to the mountains for some much needed relaxation and fresh air.  Throughout the 7 hours in the car my partner kept asking me- “Did you fart?”  It got to be funny after the 3rd or 4th time when I could honestly say “no” I hadn’t.  I think we have all experienced the mortifying moment when we have accidently passed gas at the most inopportune moment. And instead of claiming it we delicately let the foul air pass without a comment or apology.

When we finally got to the mountains we were walking in the woods and my partner turns to me and makes the comment on how he thinks he can smell the controversial sewer that was just put in 1.5 years before.  For a brief moment I let him believe that it was the sewer that smelled so horrible.  I was just too embarrassed to tell him that I had indeed passed gas this time.  After driving in a car for 7 hours I felt I was in a state of congestion and all around stagnancy.  The diet of chips and soda pop couldn’t have helped any to this state of toxicity I was feeling. I could feel the last 7 hours gurgling around in my belly and trying to get free and since we were walking back and forth from my car, which was about 1/3 of a mile away from the cabin, everything started to move.

I laughed away his comment but then it happened again! I thought for sure I was safe in relieving my bloated intestines in the open air but I soon realized I had no choice but to claim it.  I could not in good conscience let him believe that he could smell the controversial sewer when it was just my stinky body.  So begrudgingly I claimed it and we laughed about it.   It is funny how laughter can make an uncomfortable situation much easier.

Over the course of the next day and 1/2 it became a joke of ours again as he kept on asking me if I had farted.  By this time we had both realized it was us that smelled so badly!  We realized how we were really stinky humans.  The accumulation of the stress of the city, mom’s home cooking around the holidays, boxes of Girl Scout cookies, weekends of parties and over indulgence were all diffusing from our tissues.  pew!  All these toxins were quite potent in the forest away from the pollution and scents of the city.

As we go into spring it is a great time to shed ourselves of these unwanted scents, pounds, emotions, and skin cells that have accumulated over the winter months.  Our liver grows stagnant over the winter from a high fat and high sugar diet.  Being stagnant can cause irritability, headaches and bloating to name a few negative side effects.  Below are some remedies for quick and easy detoxification.  Just make sure it fits within your health guidelines and won’t tax your body systems beyond what it can handle. If you are unsure discuss detoxification methods with your doctor.

Cleanse the liver/gallbladder

When the liver is over burdened with toxins one might experience extra weight, bloating, wrinkled skin, acne and rashes. One of the most popular cleanses I have seen for the liver is the Master Cleanse.

Lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed with water make this a sweet and spicy cocktail full of healing benefits.

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver.  It is released into the digestive tract to help emulsify fats.  If not working properly one might experience pain in the right abdomen, bloating and headaches.  A diet low in fats, refined sugars and high in fiber will help to combat the onslaught of gallstones.  Check out this website for more cleanse ideas:  http://www.justcleansing.com/gallbladder.htm

Hydrotherapy-  Eastern Europeans know well the benefits of hydrotherapy for cleansing the body.  Taking a hot sauna in winter was often the only form of cleansing the body.  The heat relaxes and heats the body releasing toxins from adipose tissue into the surrounding tissue.  Adding the cold plunge/shower constricts the blood vessels and surrounding tissue flushing out this accumulation by a pumping of the blood.  Repeat this cycle a few times and soon you will experience improved circulation, body odor, digestive health and a reduction in bloating.

Tongue scrubbing aids in detoxing as well. If the liver is congested the body will release toxins through the skin, lungs and tongue. Keeping that tongue fresh will help reduce bad breath and take some of the pressure of the liver.

Dry brushing the skin not only improves the appearance of the skin but it detoxifies the body and improves circulation.  Dry brush your skin before a shower towards the heart to get rid of accumulated skin cells.  Brushing towards the heart helps to move the blood and lymph getting rid of excess waste such as cellular debris.

Drink more h2o -a gallon a day for a week.  Nothing can match the power of drinking your daily quota of water and more!  Depending upon your body mass index determines whether you should be drinking 64 oz of water or 120.

Ease back/ cutout processed foods, alcohol, sweets.  We all love those potato chips and hershey bars or whatever your guilty pleasure is. Maybe it is that gin and tonic or beer at the end of the work day or week? What we don’t realize is the big task we give our liver in processing all these foreign foods.

Incorporate Raw food/ Spring Foods.  Spring is the time to take advantage of young spring greens and vegetables.  Eating local vegetables can improve health by giving you the vitamins and minerals we have grown deficient of through the winter months of hibernation and excess.

The four C’s

My current business model is considered to be successful by some of my colleagues and social peers.  I spent three years growing a full-time massage therapy business out of my home and the 4th year-I moved it out of my home and serviced three neighborhoods equally with a demand of growth in each neighborhood.  All of this occurred with only the referrals of friends and clients who believe in me.  Thank-you so much for that!

My accountant and potential investors beg to differ on my level of success however.  In one year I have managed to save only $2,000 for emergencies, retirement and rainy-day fun.  In my current model, I have a profit of $100/ month and  I can physically massage only  2-5 more clients each week to improve profits and then I am tapped out.  I tend to agree with them-not much room for profit here.  I spend my time running from location to location to location- that is 3 in sum- to service my clients and help them recover from injury and step out of stress patterns.  My need for diversity and movement has the potential to make this model satisfactory for me- on paper anyway.

In each business location I have a very unique type of client.  I find it exciting and challenging to meet new clients and devise a treatment plan that will help them overcome pain.  This sentiment seems to be an industry standard.  Most Massage Therapists love to be around people and help them with whatever it is they need.  After 5 years of renting space from landlords and running from place to place I realize the harsh reality; in order to survive as a massage therapist I need to generate a whole new income in addition to the one I currently have.  It is necessary to take that superficial success and make it into a deep-seeded entity that will sustain, profit and provide a service for all.  I can no longer survive merely as a sole proprietor; it is time to write a new business plan and set a path for the future.  So I purchased the following book by Rhonda Abrams.
Six-Week Start-Up: A Step-by-Step Program for Starting Your Business, Making Money, and Achieving Your Goals!

Initially I hesitated to buy the “Six-Week Start-Up” because I already have a business.  Why do I need a start up book?  Aren’t I trying to save more money? And then I imagined what my retirement would be like with an annual $2,000 saved for retirement and I forked out the money.  Now is the time to leave behind any misguided concepts I had about running a business.  Nobody really taught me how to run a business- I just winged it and it is time to re-structure and create a profitable massage business.  It is time to grow my business and bring other experts in to play.

One of the first steps to accomplish, according to Rhonda Abrams is to clarify the business concept.  What is the vision of your business?  The entrepreneur seeks to start a business for many reasons.  Identifying those reasons and creating a business to support personal goals and business values will ultimately lead to the most success.  In order to clarify the concept Abrams suggests you complete the following tasks:  identify your personal goals, spell out your business values, remind yourself of your source of inspiration, describe your business concept, identify your strategic position, decide whether you want partners, decide whether you want investors, consider potential exit strategies and discuss the impact of starting a business with your family.

Creativity, control, challenge and cash are the most common personal needs involved with owning a business.  In order to be successful you need to decide what is necessary to satisfy your personal needs and what needs you can be more flexible on.  If you are the creative sort you might want to find a business partner who can take care of the business operations and problem solving so you can concentrate on your art.  If you are in need of control then you might want to hire people to take care of the creative aspects of the business while you handle the cash and management.

Reading further into the tasks I see how if I want to grow my business I will have to give up some control to a potential investor.   I am not sure I like this idea.  The way I run my business would now be under the scrutiny of investors.  I would have to answer to why I spent money on something…return on investment…and justify new opportunities.  On the flip side I will get help with the challenges that arise in a business.  I will have an additional critical eye to problem solve, devise new procedures and create new services.  I can see how giving up some control allows for more free time in my personal life.  It also allows for more of my cycles to be spent on the creative aspects of my business, such as developing treatment packages and the challenge of developing new modalities.

Already this book is definitely worth investigating more.   Not only does this seem like sound business advice I find it useful to apply to my personal life. These four C’s can be applied to potential partnerships and decisions that need to be made in the future.  It helps me understand the dynamic of motivation behind the individual and how to offer a more valuable service as a business entity.

Hey Soul Sister

The song “Hey Soul Sister” by Train seems to follow me around. Previously, I had only heard it in settings in which it was hard for me to sit still and listen.  A little hyper-active and ADD I like to call myself.  After finally sitting and listening to the lyrics and watching the video I realize what is so nice about it.  The upbeat harmonica and the fast rhythm guitar make me want to bounce and bop as I listen to the song.  It seems to go straight to my core, hugging my innards. \”Hey Soul Sister\” by Train

It is like the sensation of finding that something you have been looking for all over the place.  It is the perfect blend of sweet and sour, it’s like the milk and sugar in my coffee.  I pause and think of all the wonderful people I have met in my day and the light-hearted fun we have had.  The girl-friend that I stayed up with into all hours of the night laughing and talking, the boyfriend I went camping and sailing with, the family trip that was so relaxing and stress free, the practice session with my guitar buddies.  We all know these times; very different and unique for every person.

The song bounced its way into my heart as I sat in front of my computer watching it’s video.  My chest loosened and my breathe came easier as I thought about the wonderful people in my life.  I thought about the good times to come-my heart softened and smiled at me.  It thanked me for remembering it and that it wants to be joyous too; that it doesn’t want to hurt so much and be so sad for those people who are losing their jobs and homes in these depressing times.  I remind myself that joy exists still today even if I need to seek it out.   And I can also dish it out.

I believe Train is singing about a person they are enamored with- and maybe a bit too much- but it doesn’t have to be just love about another person.  It can be love for a stress-free work environment, a a fulfilling hobby, or a nutritious meal.

We are inundated by external and internally set deadlines, an over-abundance of media stimuli and all sorts of noise which we have to grow accustomed to in order to function in a modern world.  We become shielded from sensation in order to be productive.  With that shielding we also lose a heart-felt connection with the world. We no longer feel our environment.  Culturally we tend to intellectualize our experience rather than feeling it.

Have we forgotten how to create that sensation i mentioned above, the sensation of finding the perfect something?  Of allowing a sensation to envelope you, wrap it’s arms around you and make you feel whole and loved.

Perhaps this song doesn’t envelope you- but another might!  My idea of Music Therapy is that it makes you feel or move and gets into the very part of you that needs it.   Maybe you have a headache?  The perfect song helps you float down the gentle river relaxing your scalp muscles and reminds you to let your head float on your neck.  Or you have a stellar stereo system at home that kicks out some bass while you dance around the house cleaning. Instead of having a back ache from scrubbing and vacuuming-your spine feels limber and you feel you have achieved a happy and clean base of operations.  Perhaps you have that favorite chair you recline in and listen to the perfect composition in the hard to find recording; satisfying your sense of being, or you have that favorite cd you put into your car stereo and belt along to instead of screaming profanities at the other drivers who obviously don’t know how to drive!

Music Therapy

According to the American Music Therapy Association Music therapy is an evidence based, clinical approach of musical interventions with the goal of therapeutic benefits. Music therapists assess well-being, cognitive skills, physical health, social functioning and communication abilities through music responses.  The therapist designs music sessions for individuals and groups based on these needs using improvisation, song writing, performance and receptive listening.

Music Therapy is useful for all ages of individuals; babies, children, adults, elderly.  It is useful for those with health needs, age related disease and learning disabilities.  You can find Music Therapists in hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, correctional facilities, drug rehabilitation programs and more!  Since 1994 it has been covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

Music therapy can be used for healthy individuals as well.  You can listen to music and passively receive its stress reduction benefits  or you can play an instrument such as the drums or guitar to de-stress and release tension.  Music is often used during labor to calm the laboring mother and baby during the birthing process.

In the United Kingdom Music Therapy was used in the hospitals post war to help rehab the soldiers.  The music soothed the nerves of the patients while distracting them form their pain.  While in India the Ragas were used in therapeutic settings to help the individual achieve the greatest level of self-realization possible.  The Ragas are based on sonorous melody which are dependent on correct intonation and right use of the basic elements of music; rhythm, volume, beats, and piece of melody.  In western Music Therapy the debate is whether or not music ability is needed for the patient to achieve therapeutic benefits.
