Meet Erika Finley- New Massage Therapist at Kiva Therapeutics!!
I was taught the value of science- questioning, hypothesizing, analyzing, and problem solving from my mother, who was, among many other things, a scientist, and my father who was an engineer. The combination of this and my inclination towards physical activity and manipulation of the physical world has led me to love being a massage therapist. I have done many other things for work, and am thankful to have come around the circles, leading myself here. I have a B.A. in French from Northern Arizona University, and have since moved between Arizona, Oregon, and Idaho. The French degree, while loved, is not a broad career opener, so, I have done trail construction / design, taught English in France, worked with youth education on a non -profit farm, was a field instructor for a wilderness therapy company, spent some time as a flower gardener, as well as a few others. I am fascinated by anatomy and the human body, and intrigued by its injuries, I enjoy being active, and am excited to meet new people, making massage a great fit for me. In my practice I enjoy the challenge of questioning, analyzing, and finding ways assist my clients in reaching whatever individual goals they bring to the table.
When working through adhesions or contractures with clients, I love to let my imaginative mind see the individual muscle cells and the strings of connective tissue and then broaden it out to their connections and potential interferences from other parts of the body and mind. I view the body as a collection of functioning units, interdependent upon one another. If one muscle is in pain, it is not alone in its dysfunction, and it’s important to work with the whole situation, not an individual symptom.
I went to school at Three Oaks Academy and Integrative Therapy Clinic in Boise, ID where I focused on clinical approaches to massage therapy. I view it as a way to broaden the capacities of our healthcare system and bridge the gap between physical and mental / emotional health. It has a role in improving one’s health, vitality, and emotional stability, preventing further injury or disease, and in assisting with the challenges of recovery.
I use techniques of Deep Tissue, Connective Tissue Release, Swedish, Trigger Point Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage, and Postural Analysis, with the values of a relaxing approach to reach the individual goals of each client.
When not at work, you will find me reading a book, browsing through thrift / consignment stores, hiking, climbing, rafting rivers, doing yoga, relaxing with friends, travelling, or learning how to sail.

Smooth as Silk Shaving Creme
I personally find shaving to be a timely chore with little reward. In the winter season, my legs are left feeling slightly raw and in need of a serious moisturizing creme-post shower. And not to mention, I don’t seem to achieve a close shave. The next day I am digging around for a new razor in hopes of getting the fleeting silky smooth leg. So once again I am taking extra time in the shower to shave my legs…when I would rather have an extra 20 minutes of sleep!
As a massage therapist, I often hear from my female clients, ” sorry, my legs are prickly”. Which makes me realize that many other people are suffering from the not so silky shave syndrome as well! I also notice my male clients faces go through bouts of razor burn and flaking skin in the winter due to the harsh elements and daily shaving regiments.
If you suffer from razor burn, and a not so close shave, you have to try this nurturing shaving creme recipe. It is easy to make, with pure ingredients and can be scented to your liking. Which is an excellent option for those with sensitive skin. Your skin will feel smooth, silky and moisturized post shave! A great shaving creme for people with tight schedules! No extra time needed to take away the alligator skin and treat the razor burn. It just doesn’t happen. This shaving cream is silky and slippery with a light lather. Don’t expect mounds of foam when you apply to skin but a nice creamy layer of goodness!
1/4 cup Olive Oil, Almond Oil or Coconut Oil
2-3 TBSP Shea or Cocoa Butter
1/4 Cup Aloe Gel or Honey
1 TBSP White Cosmetic Clay or Bentonite Clay ( Optional)
2 tsp Baking Soda
1/4 Cup Castile Soap
Vitamin E ( to preserve )
10-20 drops Lemon Essential Oil ( Optional )
10-20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil ( Optional )
This recipe will make approximately 6 oz…or the size of a wide mouth short mason jar. If you don’t want to make it yourself, contact Kiva Therapeutics Apothecary and we will ship you a jar for $10 plus shipping and handling.
For your convenience, I have posted links to Amazon where you can purchase all the specialty items needed to make this balm. I did not put a link for baking soda however, because most kitchens will have a box of it around. If not, it is easy to pick up at the local store.
