Tennis Elbow Treatment

Tennis Elbow / Lateral EpicondylitisTreatment
Tennis Elbow can be a painful and consuming condition. If you find yourself with the diagnosis or suffer with this condition periodically try the following self care regiment. With consistent effort and care you will have reduced pain and greater mobility. Each individual will react differently to different treatments. You may want to wear a brace while recovering from tennis elbow or take a NSAID to help alleviate any inflammation that is present. Also be sure to rest your elbow in order to allow space for it to recover.

Isometric Extension
The best way of contracting the muscles isometrically (or statically – no movement) is to get a partner to resist your movement, or use your other hand or an object such as a table to resist movement.
Position the arm with the forearm and palm facing downwards and supported if possible.
Attempt to extend the wrist by lifting it back as if trying to point the fingers to the ceiling.
Maintain the contraction for 5 seconds. Rest and repeat 10-15 times.
There should not be any movement at the wrist joint.

Finger Extension
Bring all your fingertips together as if making a ‘beak shape’.
Place a rubber band over your fingers, holding the tips together.
Move your fingers away from each other against the resistance of the band.
Repeat this 10-20 times.

Dynamic Wrist Extension
When the above exercises can be completed comfortably without pain then you can move on to dynamic exercises.
This may be from 5 days onwards. Do not rush. If the injury becomes painful take a step back.
Dynamic exercises can be performed using a light weight (about 1 kg). Move the wrist from flexion to extension.
Start with 1 set of 10 repetitions daily and build up gradually up to 3 sets of 20 repetitions.
The same exercise can be performed using a resistance band.
Rest your forearm on your knee, pinning one end of the band under your foot.
Wrap the other end around your hand.
Start with the wrist in a flexed position (pointing down to the floor) and the band pulled taught.
Extend your wrist, keeping the forearm still.
Slowly return back to the start position and repeat 10-15 times.
Gradually increase the number of repetitions you perform.

Self Massage
Rest your forearm with your thumb facing upwards.
Wrap fingers of other hand around forearm to find the bone edge of forearm.
Move your fingers up towards the sky about an inch…here are your extensor muscles.
Gently massage the extensor muscles looking for any tender or touch spots, heeding them special attention.
Gently move wrist and forearm while massaging the muscles to improve blood flow and realign muscle tissue.

Ice Therapy
Apply a bag of ice to elbow up to 6 times per day for 15 minutes.
Freeze water in a Dixie cup.
Tear down sides of cup to access edge of ice.
Rub edge of ice into sore areas on arm for a minute.
Return cup to freezer and repeat above steps frequently throughout the day.

Reduce Muscle Pain!

Stimulating the lymphatic system through dry- brushing will increase your recovery time. After a heavy workout your muscles are slightly shredded and torn from the exertion. Your body responds by repairing the muscle, rebuilding it stronger and hopefully more efficient. The muscles produce lactic acid in addition to cellular debris involved in the tearing down and rebuilding stages of muscle growth. We can recognize this through the sore muscles we feel after a strenuous workout.

Dry-Brushing is a great way to decrease over-all and localized muscle soreness. By brushing the skin towards the heart you gently stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system picks up, removes and sorts through cellular debris; ensuring no harmful waste products are left in the body to cause dysfunction later on down the road.

Just before showering take five minutes with a long-handled natural bristled brush. Starting at the feet and ankles brush the skin towards the heart. Continue with the arms, back, stomach, armpits and chest. You can even brush your face and neck if you experience puffiness or jaw soreness. After brushing, shower as normal and finish with a cold rinse. Your body will feel lighter and less sore after this regiment. Don’t be afraid to perform daily!

September 5th and the Season is over.

It is September 5th and it has been approximately one year since I moved my massage practice from Seattle, WA to Priest Lake, ID.  When I first moved to Priest
Lake the time was spent recovering from the high speed of caffeinated
Seattle, soaking in vitamin D for my deficient body and repairing a
cabin that had sat unused for 10 years.  Everything moved so
differently it was hard to find a daily rhythm and seasonal routine.
Moving into the winter of 2011-12, it was a welcome quiet and serene
atmosphere up at Priest Lake.  Mostly it was enjoyable but there was
an aura of depression that permeated the air.  I couldn’t quite grasp
what it was until now.  The manic season of summer is balanced by the
depressed season of winter.  People make hay when the sun shines
around here.

The rhythm of Priest Lake is the life and times of a seasonal resort community.  The high season is summer, and according to the rules of the vacationer’s up at Priest Lake
summer is over.  People are pulling their boats out of the water and
readying them for winter and closing up their cabins.  For the local
residents of Priest Lake, now is the time to catch up on much needed
rest, play and preparation for the winter.  Fall is the time when the
local residents have a minute to breathe after the mania of the
summer.  Business owners and employees alike have worked 16 hours a
day, seven days a week since July 4th without a day off.
The combination has depleted the body and spirit but added to the
purse.  The high energy of the summer still permeates the air and
there is a feeling of getting things done for the winter. Winterizing
is what the vacationer’s call this process. For the residents and
business owner’s at Priest Lake, winterizing means something
completely different.

First and foremost it means taking a short breather and recovering from the manic pace set all throughout the summer. Part of this includes getting out on the lake or into the
woods for a hike because it was too busy in order to do so during the
high season of summer.  Or it means taking care of the injuries that
have accumulated over the summer from long hours of hard work and
play with little sleep.

Secondly it means bust a move and get some outdoor projects completed before the snow hits in 2-3 months.  This may include getting cords of wood in order to stay warm for the
winter or repairing any  fixtures that fell astray during the manic
summer season.

Thirdly it means implement a marketing campaign to generate new business for next year’s summer and to generate more business for the slower fall and winter season.  It
also means collect unemployment for the seasonal worker and wait till
the next busy season comes around with people who have money to
spend.

For those of us who are established or who are planners, the plan is already in place.  New marketing campaigns have already been implemented and some of the work has
already been accomplished.  For those of us who are not planners it
is time to hustle and get it going!

Whew!  It sure is hard to find a moment to relax up here at the lake.  Thank goodness it so dang pretty that you can’t help but feel relaxed while you look out the
window at the lake, mountains and wildlife while at work.

A few patients came in and received chair massage while most of the volunteers came and had a complimentary neck and shoulder massage. Thank-you Lion’s Club volunteers for providing such a great service!!!

May 19th Kiva set up a mobile spa at Elkin’s Resort in Nordman, ID for a corporate retreat.
While the board members met and set the strategic guidelines for the future, their spouses and children were able to relax and recoup from a hectic lifestyle in a cabin set aside specially for Kiva Mobile Spa. Participants received massage, nail services- Kiva contracted (Barefoot Bellas in Priest River), infrared light treatment, cucumber water and light snacks. What a way to enjoy beautiful Priest Lake!
